The Designated Hitter Rule

Ok Cathy, today's homework is from the infamous dlewis.

1) What is the designated hitter rule?
2) Do you think it is a good or bad thing?
3) why?

-----------------------Cathy's Answer-------------------
1.) A designated hitter is someone who traditionally, since 1973, in the AL, bats for the pitcher. It's slightly different for non-professional teams.
2.) I think it is a bad idea
3.) because it was made up due to the fact that the offensive teams sucked at the time, 1973.

---------------------------Grade-------------------------
B+. good work on1 and 2. For 3, I would have said that it bastardizes the integrity of the game. If everyone did this you wouldn't get Kerry hitting a home run on his first game back from Tommy johns. You wouldn't get Dontrell Willis hitting 2 home runs in one game. And the American league sucks.

--------------------------Update--------------------------
A-. Good work

Anyone out there can feel free to help Cathy by commenting on the post. I will grade her answers and give my response in an update to this post. Good Luck!!!

Bring this to an A- by telling us what happens when the designated hitter plays the field.

I can agree with the fact that not using the dh definitely makes the game interesting. But I think it adds a different flavor to the american league and national leauge. I guess we would be considered spoiled though since we have the Sox and Cubs to watch. Other cities with only one team don't get to experience both teams with dh and no dh.

The designated hitter spot is forfieted and they cannot use it for the rest of the game. The pitcher must then bat!! Why you would have them play a position then is dumb to me. But then, I am not a man!!!

I disagree with Cathy's grade on this one. It seems to me her answer to #3 is very legit but could use a little more explanation. By reading her answer, I'm thinking she doesn't like the idea that they made a new rule to make up for players sucking. Seems like a good reason to me not to like the rule. I'd give her an A- at the least!
